Why language matters more than people expect

Fertility treatment involves consent, drug schedules measured in hours, and decisions taken under stress. Every one of those goes better in the language you think in. Dr Gupta trained and practised in Nepal before moving to India, and consultations can be held in Nepali or Hindi throughout - not through an interpreter, and not only at the first visit.

For Bengali-speaking patients from Bangladesh, the centre staff include Bengali speakers and this website can be read in Bengali using the language buttons at the top of every page.

Start at home if you can

Indira IVF has its own centres in both countries, and for many couples the sensible first step is local rather than international.

Initial evaluation, semen analysis, hormone profiles and a scan can all be done at home. Travel is worth it when the case is complex, when cycles have already failed, or when a procedure is needed that is not available locally.

When travelling to Bengaluru is worth it

• Repeated implantation failure after good embryos have been transferred.
• Recurrent miscarriage, including where immune factors are suspected.
• Azoospermia needing surgical sperm retrieval by TESA or PESA, followed by ICSI.
• A thin or unresponsive endometrium after previous cycles.
• A cycle abandoned elsewhere without a clear explanation.

Planning the trip

Nepali citizens do not need a visa for India. Bangladeshi nationals do, and a medical visa usually permits an accompanying attendant; confirm the current requirement with the Indian mission that covers you rather than relying on a clinic summary.

A stimulated cycle runs about two to three weeks from the first injection to egg collection, with scans every few days. A fresh transfer follows three to five days later. A freeze-all cycle splits this into two shorter trips, which most patients travelling internationally prefer - the second visit is short and can be timed to suit you.

Send your reports before booking anything. A video consultation first establishes whether travelling is appropriate at all, what it would involve and what it would cost - and occasionally establishes that you should not travel, which is also a useful answer.

What Indian law permits

The same rules apply to visitors as to Indian patients, with one exception that matters. Surrogacy is not available to foreign nationals under the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021. Sex selection is a criminal offence under the PCPNDT Act 1994 and is never offered. Donor gametes may not be bought or sold; donors come through a registered ART bank and are anonymous to recipients. Treatment age limits are 21 to 50 for women and 21 to 55 for men.

Care once you are home

A pregnancy that begins here is looked after where you live. You leave with the full cycle record - protocol, doses, embryology, what was transferred and what remains in storage - in a form your own doctor can act on, and follow-up questions are answered by video and on WhatsApp in Nepali or Hindi.
